Social Security By the RetiPilot Editorial Team · May 5, 2026 · 6 min read

Few retirement questions cause more worry than whether Social Security will still be paying benefits decades from now. The honest answer is more reassuring than the headlines suggest.

How Social Security is actually funded

Social Security is largely pay-as-you-go: the payroll taxes collected from today’s workers fund the benefits paid to today’s retirees, with a trust fund reserve that absorbs the difference. It is not a single pot of money that can simply run dry.

That structure matters. As long as people are working and paying into the system, benefits keep flowing. The real question is not whether Social Security disappears, but whether scheduled benefits might be trimmed if lawmakers make no changes.

What the projections really say

Even under the trustees’ more cautious estimates, if nothing at all were done, the program could still pay roughly three-quarters of scheduled benefits out of ongoing payroll taxes. A range of well-understood adjustments — to the payroll tax cap, the full retirement age, or the benefit formula — could close the remaining gap.

In other words, planning as if you will receive most of your benefit is far more realistic than planning as if you will receive nothing.

The decision you can actually control

You cannot control what Congress does, but you can control when you claim — and that choice has an enormous, permanent effect on your monthly check. Claiming at 62 locks in a reduced benefit for life, while waiting toward 70 increases it substantially.

For many people, delaying acts like inexpensive, inflation-protected longevity insurance. The right age depends on your health, other income, and whether a spouse is involved.

Key takeaways

  • Social Security is funded by ongoing payroll taxes, not a single account that empties.
  • Even with no changes, most scheduled benefits could still be paid.
  • Your claiming age is the lever you control — and it changes your benefit for life.
